200+ Resume Skills by Industry (A Reference, Not a Copy-Paste List)
A skills list is one of the most over-thought sections of a resume. Most candidates either drown the section in everything they have ever opened in a browser tab or strip it to three bland adjectives. Both extremes fail. The right skills section communicates a specific shape: this person is credible in these domains, would welcome questions about these tools, and aligns with the language a posting actually uses.
This post is a curated reference list of more than 200 resume skills, organized by category. Use it as a vocabulary aid—not a checklist to copy. Listing skills you cannot defend is one of the most expensive resume habits in 2026, because hiring managers verify in interviews and ATS keyword scoring rewards depth more than breadth.
How to use this list
Three rules:
- Pick skills you would welcome a deep question about. If you list Python, expect a Python screen. If you list MEDDPICC, expect to walk through a deal using the framework.
- Group, do not pile. Use 3–5 categories that match how the field thinks about the work.
- Order by relevance to the role you are applying to. Move the categories that match the posting to the top of your skills section.
Full reasoning is in our skills section best practices guide.

Universal soft skills (use sparingly, prove in bullets)
Communication · Cross-functional collaboration · Stakeholder management · Executive presence · Mentoring · Coaching · Conflict resolution · Negotiation · Public speaking · Technical writing · Leadership · Strategic thinking · Decision making · Prioritization · Time management · Adaptability · Resilience
These are real skills, but they belong in your bullets, not your skills section. "Communication" listed in skills tells a recruiter nothing. "Drove weekly executive readouts on the migration program; scope and risk stayed visible to the CEO and CTO across the 9-month plan" in a bullet proves it.

How to choose 8–15 skills from this list
- Open the role you are applying to. Mark every required and preferred skill—the same extraction step from our keywords-from-job-description guide.
- Filter for the ones you have legitimate experience in.
- Group your filtered skills into 3–5 categories.
- Order categories by relevance to the role.
- Verify each listed skill against the question: "Could I confidently take a 30-minute interview on this?" If not, cut.
Then back the skills with bullets that prove them—see quantifying achievements for the bullet patterns that turn a listed skill into credible evidence.
Your skills list is the first place a hiring manager spot-checks for honesty. Treat it like a contract: every line is a promise to be a credible interview.
What this list is not
This is not a copy-paste shopping list. The strongest skills sections in 2026 are tighter, not longer—the average resume probably lists too many skills, not too few. Use this reference for vocabulary calibration and to make sure you are using the same terms a posting uses, then trim to the ones you can defend.
Frequently asked questions
How many skills should I list on my resume?
8–15 skills grouped into 3–5 categories is a good range for most professionals. Long unstructured lists dilute signal; short generic ones miss keyword overlap with postings.
Should I list soft skills like "leadership" in the skills section?
Generally no. Soft skills should be proved in bullets. A skills section listing "communication" tells a recruiter nothing; a bullet showing you ran weekly executive readouts proves it.
How do I pick which skills from a long list to put on my resume?
Three filters: relevance to the role you are applying to, depth you would welcome a 30-minute interview on, and current usage. Anything that fails any of those filters comes off.
Should I list skills from old jobs I no longer use?
Only if they remain relevant to the role you are applying to. A 2014 framework you have not touched in five years is filler; a foundational skill (SQL, Excel, regulatory knowledge) that you still use is worth listing.
Do certifications belong in the skills section?
Usually no—certifications get their own section near education. Listing them in skills mixes vocabulary with credentials. The exception is when a posting explicitly calls out a certification as a required skill.
